General Mills Commits To Reducing Sugar Content

As a mom, I am quite aware of what foods my children consume. It is widely especially in my family that I tend to be picky maybe too much so but I like knowing the my kids are getting great nutrition out of the foods that they eat.  My daughter is not a picky eater but she is not a big eater and if she could (like any kid), she would eat cookies, chocolate, and sugar all day long.

So not happening in my house!  Before I became a mom, I viewed cereal as a breakfast food only - now it is breakfast, snack, and maybe even dinner depending on the age of my children.  Cheerios and bananas are a huge hit with my daughter and I am sure my son will love them too.

I avoid those high sugar cereals as much as I possibly can.  However, as a rare treat, you will find digging through my coupons and buying Cinnamon Toast Crunch for my husband.  There is nothing that can make my husband's day better than knowing he gets his favorite cereal for breakfast.  My daughter loves to eat whatever daddy eats so I was thrilled to find out that General Mills was committed to reducing the sugar content in all of their cereals.

General Mills has already been working on this and have instead been increasing increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

General Mills and MyBlogSpark reached out to me to let me know this great information.  Below is some more great information that I thought you might want to know:

Did you know that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source of key nutrients in children´s diets.

Other cereal benefits:
• Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children´s diets.

• Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child´s diet today.

• More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.
Studies also demonstrate the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

For more information about kids and cereals, please visit Cereal Health and Wellness.

Right now if you visit here you will find a $1 off coupon for one of four General Mills cereals.

Disclosure: I received this information and four free cereal coupons from General Mills through MyBlogSpark.  All opinions and stories are my own.

CouponMap: A New Way To Save Money!

Just yesterday, I was introduced to CouponMap.  I am very excited about it because I believe that it can really help me save money when I go into town to go shopping.  CouponMap is unique in that it allows a viewer to type in their location to find coupons in their local area.  I had trouble with the zip code so I typed in my city and state instead.  I uncovered a lot of printable restaurant coupons that I could use if we were going to eat at any of those places.

My favorite thing about CouponMap is that it tells you where the cheapest place to purchase gas is!  I don't know about you but driving around looking for the cheapest gas station doesn't save me gas - it just uses it up and is a waste of time.  I found that there was a gas station with gas that was $.10 cheaper than the other prices by searching through CouponMap.

I highly recommend that you check out CouponMap for the next time you make a trip or even just shopping in your local area.  You may find some hidden deals that you didn't know about.

Disclosure: This is my honest unbaised opinion of the CouponMap. You may or may not agree with my opinion. This post was NOT sponsored in anyway by CouponMap.

Birthday Giveaway #5 - Tyson Heat and Eat Meals {Ends 10/21}

As a Keeper at Home, I normally cook all our meals from scratch but there are times when I need that extra help because life gets busy.  Yes, believe it or not, I am not the perfect mom and there are occasions when we eat convenience foods. I am not going to apologize except say that I look for items that do not have very many preservatives and food coloring.

I was recently introduced Tyson's Heat 'N Eat Entrees and really love them.  What I love about their Dinner Meats is that there are no preservatives!  You can pick these up in your grocery's refrigerator section and take it home and make yummy meals!

Our favorite has been their Beef Pot Roast in Gravy.  Thanks to Robin Miller and Tyson, I took this great entree and turned it into Robin's Philly Cheese Pot Roast Sandwiches with Mushrooms and Onions.  My family loves Philly Cheese Sandwiches so this was a BIG hit!

Another great entree that we loved was Chicken Breast Medallions in White Wine and Garlic Sauce.  This was delicious with mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side!  I love how simple Tyson's Heat 'N Eat Meals are because it just makes the days when life is busy easier.  And as we move in a few weeks, having meals like this is going to make life even easier!

Right after this reveiw/giveway post, I will do a seperate post with Robin Miller and Tyson's great Philly Cheese Pot Roast Sandwiches with Mushrooms and Onions.  I will also be posting a new recipe everyday this week from them for some yummy tasty ideas for you all!

I mentioned that I paired Tyson's Heat 'N Eat Meals with a yummy mashed potatoes and vegetables.  Well right now, Tyson is doing a sweepstakes called "Perfect Pairs" that you can enter! A Fun Recipe Idea with Yoplait Whips! Review and Giveaway {Ends 10/7}

My daughter loves popsicles! We try very hard to make th as healthy as possible but I am sure you know that if you buy them, they will most likely be filled with sugar and be as far from healthy as possible.
Thanks to MyBlogSpark and Yoplait, we were introduced to a new way to enjoy a frozen treat and even make some very fun and unique popsicles! MyBlogSpark sent us a gift package with a cooler tote, color changing spoons, a set of a Popsicle molds, and two coupons for Yoplait Whips! to try.

Yoplait Whips! have a lighter texture than your normal yogurt and are great frozen! I have never though of freezing my yogurt before but it was yummy! Gracie and I took two flavors of Whips! and layered them in the Popsicle molds. We froze them overnight and then after lunch Gracie enjoyed her sweet treat.

I love that this treat has good things in it for her like priobitics and calcium. My only disappointment is that Yoplait Whips! has high fructose corn syrup, something my family strives to stay away from.

I did love Yoplait Whips! as Popsicles but I found that I wasn't a fan of the texture just right out of the fridge. There are many others that love it's texture so I think this is just a preference thing.

Yoplait Whips! comes in Strawberry Mist, Chocolate, Key Lime Pie, Orange Crème, Chocolate Raspberry, Lemon Burst, Peaches 'N Cream and Raspberry Mousse. They also have a brand new flavor of Vanilla Creme. We tried Raspberry Mousse and Chocolate.

Thanks to MyBlogSpark and Yoplait, one winner will get try these for themselves as well as receive a great prize package pictured above! You will receive 12 color changing spoons, one popsicle mold set, a great cooler tote, and two free coupons for Yoplait Whips!

Win It!!

Our Frugal Date Night with Wanchai Ferry - Review and Giveaway {Ends 9/1}

We had just been home from the bringing our little guy from the hospital 2 weeks when I knew that my husband and I needed some time by ourselves. How do you do that with 2 littles under two? I could not hire a babysitter for my two-week old and my 20 month old was wanting mommy and daddy around since life had changed so much. I decided to have a frugal date night with my husband. I did not tell him - all he knew was that I was waiting to have dinner with him as he would be at home around 8 that night.

Thanks to Wanchai Ferry and My Blog Spark, we were given the opportunity to not only try Wanchai Ferry's Orange Chicken but we were also sent a "Stay-At-Home" package which included Asian inspired rice bowls, chopsticks and bamboo place mats.

As I fed my daughter dinner that night, I prepared the dining room table for our "date". I put out our special tablecloth and laid out the mats and neat little bowls that My Blog Spark had sent us. I had no intention on using the chopsticks but laid them out also.

I then threw Gracie in the bathtub and began to dress up for our "date". I knew we weren't going anywhere but I wanted to make it as nice as possible for both of us. I got her quickly into bed, fed our 2 week old, started up some nice music for our "restaurant" and began to cook the Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken.

I was very skeptical. I do not like Orange Chicken and I know my husband doesn't either but I thought we might as well give it a try. It was super easy to cook up. There are quite a few steps but it was simple and easy to follow. I normally cook everything from scratch so this was nice to make a meal in just 14 minutes.

I added a salad to our meal and it turned out looking really yummy. I still wasn't certain about the flavor of the Orange Chicken though. I was already preparing in my head for what to cook if we just didn't like it.

When my husband walked in, he was thrilled with the atmosphere - the candle on the table, the music in the background, and the kids were quiet and sleeping. He was thrilled that I had taken the time to not only make the house look nice but I had also taken the time to look nice for our date at home.

When he saw the chopsticks, he immediately got excited. My husband had lived in Korea for a year with the military - I knew that but I did not know he knew how to use chopsticks like the Koreans do. He had a great time teaching me not only how to eat with the chopsticks but sharing his stories of his time in Korea.

He did ask the flavor of the Wachai Ferry Chicken and when I said orange, he asked if I could leave the sauce off. I told him it was already on it so he decided to try it. We both loved it! Wanchai Ferry's Orange Chicken was some of the best we had ever tasted and it was out of bag!

We had a great date night sharing memories and creating many of our own. Yes, I ate my entire Orange Chicken with chopsticks! I wanted my fork so bad but I couldn't let my husband down. It was fun to take that time but it was something we desperately needed.

To all my readers out there, take that time to create a date night with your husband. Make your house beautiful, send your kids to bed or if they are older send them to family or a friend's house for a few hours, and take the time to share precious memories with your husband. Your family and your marriage will benefit from it.

Do you want to try Wanchai Ferry's Orange Chicken for yourself? Be sure to visit Wanchai Ferry's website for a $1.50/1 coupon. These run about $8.99 and serve two people. When you think of how expensive it is to go out to eat, this really isn't a bad price for a simple to fix date night meal.

Thanks to My Blog Spark, one of my readers will be able win the same "Stay At Home" prize package (pictured above) that we used for our date. The winner will also receive 2 coupons for a free Wanchai Ferry dinner.

THIS IS NOW CLOSED!

This giveaway ends September 1, 2009 and is open to US residents only. Make sure that you leave your email address in each comment. Leave a separate comment for every entry that you make so that these will count for you! Have fun and I look forward to announcing the winners of this great giveaway!

Thank you, Wanchai Ferry and My Blog Spark, for providing my husband and I such a fun date night. We greatly enjoyed Wanchai Ferry's Orange Chicken and will most certainly be purchasing this again for another fun date night.
